Infinitesimal deformations of double covers of smooth algebraic varieties

The goal of this paper is to give a method to compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of a double cover of a smooth algebraic variety. The space of all infinitesimal deformations has a representation as a direct sum of two subspaces. One is isomorphic to the space of simultaneous deformations of the branch locus and the base of the double covering. The second summand is the subspace of deformations of the double covering which induce trivial deformations of the branch divisor. The main result of the paper is a description of the effect of imposing singularities in the branch locus. The quantum query complexity of certification

We study the quantum query complexity of finding a certificate for a d-regular, k-level balanced NAND formula. Up to logarithmic factors, we show that the query complexity is Theta(d^{(k+1)/2}) for 0-certificates, and Theta(d^{k/2}) for 1-certificates. In particular, this shows that the zero-error quantum query complexity of evaluating such formulas is O(d^{(k+1)/2}) (again neglecting a logarithmic factor). Our lower bound relies on the fact that the quantum adversary method obeys a direct sum theorem.

Biweights on Partial *-Algebras

This chapter is devoted to the systematic investigation of biweights on partial *-algebras. These are a generalization of invariant positive sesquilinear forms that still allows a Gel’fand—Naĭmark—Segal (GNS) construction of representations. In Section 9.1, we apply this GNS construction for biweights and we obtain *-representations and cyclic vector representations of partial *-algebras, and we give some examples of biweights. Spin-1/2 sub-dynamics nested in the quantum dynamics of two coupled qutrits

In this paper we investigate the quantum dynamics of two spin-1 systems, $\vec{\textbf{S}}_1$ and $\vec{\textbf{S}}_2$, adopting a generalized $(\vec{\textbf{S}}_1+\vec{\textbf{S}}_2)^2$-nonconserving Heisenberg model. We show that, due to its symmetry property, the nine-dimensional dynamics of the two qutrits exactly decouples into the direct sum of two sub-dynamics living in two orthogonal four- and five-dimensional subspaces. Such a reduction is further strengthened by our central result consisting in the fact that in the four-dimensional dynamically invariant subspace, the two qutrits quantum dynamics, with no approximations, is equivalent to that of two non interacting spin 1/2's.
